The Demographics of Paradise: Egypt in poetry

Mary Lowery interviewed me in late November about my book “The Demographics of Paradise,” a sequence of poems thematically woven around life in ancient Egypt, and more particularly around its spiritual and religious aspects.

I think this interview was broadcast on December 12, 2014, but as usual I forgot to listen to the radio show.

You can listen to it here.

I read two of my stories for Heart of the Islands

October 24, 2014.  Radha Fournier interviews me about “Thirteen Clues for the Beginning Mind”, and I read two of the stories aloud.  Radha’s Sunday morning radio show is called Heart of the Islands Satsang, and is a mix of spiritual music and readings.  Her voice is so lovely that it makes me embarrassed about my voice. I definitely need even more practice slowing down…  Anyway, here it is.

Interview with Phyllis Smallman on “Martini Regrets”

I think this is the 6th book in Phyl’s series of mysteries revolving around her central character, Sherri Travis.  It’s a great summer read, and teaches you a lot – more than you ever wanted to know – about what it’s like to be lost and hunted in the Florida Everglades all by yourself in the nighttime.

The interview was done on September 15, 2014.

Interview with Phyl Smallman & Danielle Hubbard about Great first paragraphs in books

There are books whose first paragraphs capture your attention with such immediacy that you can’t help but keep reading.  I and Phyl (a mystery writer) and Danielle (a librarian) talk about a handful of books with terrific openings and how they prefigure the entire story in only a few lines.  This was taped at the SaltSpring Public Library on August 22, 2014.

Interview with Elaine Kozak on “Root Causes”

Here you can click on the links for Parts 1 and 2 (or A and B) of Elaine’s new book “Root Causes”.  This is a mystery book set somewhere enticingly LIKE SaltSpring Island, and which also brings us into the world of wineries and wine making.  This is not surprising, since Elaine is the cofounder of a large vineyard on Saltspring Island, Garry Oaks Winery.  The book is a great read. The interview is from August 13, 2014.

Interview with Tim Brook on “Vermeer’s Hat”

“Vermeer’s Hat” is a fascinating revelation about how much we can learn about the world as it was in Vermeer’s time – the 17th century – simply by examining his paintings and extrapolating from what we see.  The book is wonderfully quirky, amusing, sad and amazing all at once.

The interview was done on August 25, 2014.
